The competition entry presented a comprehensive architectural concept for eight planned stations along the first line of the Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway (PKM) in Gdańsk. Our proposal was awarded Second Prize in this international competition.

The PKM project represents a critical opportunity to shift communication priorities within the Gdańsk metropolitan area (Tricity). It is expected to significantly improve the transport situation between Gdańsk city centre and the districts of the so-called “Upper Terrace” and the Kashubia region. There is a strong potential for local service centres to develop around the planned stops and interchange hubs, simultaneously increasing the attractiveness of nearby residential areas.

A primary goal of the design was to create a modular, unified, and spatially recognizable architectural form that could serve as a characteristic identification element for all stations along the Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway route, regardless of their size, functional program, or specific location.

Architectural Form

The unifying element connecting all stops was defined as the platform roof structure. This specific form was intended to become a recognizable feature of the landscape—a tangible, material motif threading through all the designed stations. The concept sought a contemporary, modular form that could be easily adapted to modifications arising from the differences in platform levels and local site conditions at each location, all without losing its distinct architectural expression. The resulting design features a steel, arched truss structure with external glazing.
